How to get rid of bags under eyes

Our expert guide to banishing eye bags. This is bright eyes made easy.

Tired of looking tired? Whether the result of fatigue, stress, dehydration or simply genetics, many of us are no stranger to under-eye bags, but it’s easier than you might think to say goodbye to puffy eyes.

Our eyes are one of the first things people notice about us, so of course we want them to look as fresh, bright and beautiful as possible, but eye bags can be an unwelcome distraction. The good news? There are lots of ways to reduce the look of under-eye bags.

So, if you’ve been wondering how to get rid of eye bags in your everyday skincare routine, you’ve come to the right place.

How to get rid of bags under eyes

While you can’t necessarily get rid of under-eye bags for good, there are a few easy fixes to help reduce the appearance of puffy under eyes.

How to reduce eye bags

1. Find the ideal eye cream.
Though applying an eye bag cream won’t completely eradicate the issue, choosing one with hydrating and fortifying active ingredients can help to reduce inflammation, puffiness and discolouration. All About Eyes™ is our bestselling eye cream and a great under eye bag treatment. This lightweight, ultra refreshing cream-gel with caffeine and green tea extract hydrates, soothes and diminishes the appearance of puffy under-eye circles. Suitable for use twice daily, it’s ophthalmologist tested and suitable for sensitive skin.

2. Keep your cool.
A cold compress is a great way to reduce puffiness – hold a cold wet face cloth over under eyes for a few moments or try a few slices of ice-cold cucumber. Alternatively, you could simply store your favourite eye bag treatment in the fridge for a cooling hydration hit with every application.

3. Stay hydrated.
Dehydration is a leading cause of water retention, including under eye puffiness. Drinking lots of water (around two litres per day) helps to minimise fluid retention, while a moisturising eye bag cream like All About Eyes™ or All About Eyes™ Rich helps to nourish and fortify the delicate, thinner skin around the eyes.

4. Try a mini under-eye massage.
If you’re wondering how to reduce eye bags in moments, try a de-puffing under-eye massage twice a week. After applying a light layer of eye cream, take a few minutes to massage the under-eye area gently, working outwards from the inner corner of the eye. Remember to use very light pressure to avoid dragging and damaging the under-eye skin. Another option is to choose an eye bag treatment with a built-in massaging tool, such as the All About Eyes™ Serum De-Puffing Eye Massage. Featuring an instantly cooling rollerball applicator, our refreshing, lightweight eye serum contains panthenol for soothing, nourishing hydration. Store in the fridge to keep it icy cool.

What causes bags under eyes?

Though often associated with late nights, under eye bags can have many other causes – and we are all likely to experience them from time to time.

• Dehydration.
We’ve touched on this already, but dehydration leads to water retention around the eyes which can create a puffy appearance. Additionally, as the skin around and under your eyes is thinner than the rest of your face, it’s important to hydrate and strengthen the skin with a nourishing eye cream.

• Lack of sleep.
The most obvious cause of under eye bags is fatigue. If you regularly get less than eight hours’ beauty sleep, you may be more prone to puffy under eyes and dark circles when you wake. To improve your sleep routine, limit screen time before bed, avoid caffeine from midday and ensure you wind down fully before bedtime – a relaxing night-time skincare ritual is a great way to do so.

• Ageing and genetics.
There are a few causes of bags under eyes that are beyond our control, such as ageing and genetics. As our skin get thinner and loses elasticity with age, this can exacerbate the look of puffy under eyes, dark circles and lines and wrinkles. Eye bags can also be genetic, so, if your parents are prone to under-eye bags, it’s likely you’ll have them too.

• Diet.
As with many skin concerns, diet can contribute to the appearance of under eye bags. Eating too much salt is the main culprit with water retention, so cutting back could help minimise fluid build-up under the eyes and around the body.

• Other causes.
Other environmental causes of puffy under eye bags and dark circles include stress, crying and allergies.

Best cream for eye bags

There’s no magic product that can get rid of under eye bags, however a great eye bag cream can help reduce puffiness, brighten dark circles and hydrate the delicate skin around the eye area. Our bestselling All About Eyes™ eye cream ticks all the boxes with a cooling cream-gel formula packed with soothing mulberry root extract, energising caffeine and green tea leaf extract. It de-puffs, hydrates and boosts collagen production for a refreshed, bright-eyed look.  If you have particularly dry skin, there’s also an All About Eyes™ Rich formula with shea butter – which works well as a night-time eye cream too. For those with mature skin, our Smart Clinical Repair™ Wrinkle Correcting Eye Cream is powered by peptides and hyaluronic acid to strengthen, smooth and improve the look of eye area puffiness.
